Mobile Communication Intensity and Social Anxiety among Generation Z in Bekasi
Abstract
The development of mobile communication technology has changed social interaction patterns, especially among Generation Z, who grew up as digital natives. Smartphones are not only a means of communication, but also the main space for building social relationships. However, the intensity of mobile communication use is thought to affect psychological conditions, one of which is social anxiety. A study published in the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry showed that the longer the screen time is directly correlated with higher levels of anxiety. This study aims to analyze the effect of mobile communication on social anxiety levels among Generation Z in Bekasi. The method used in this study is a quantitative method with a survey data collection technique. The results showed that the intensity of mobile communication use affects anxiety by 52.3%. While 47,7% that anxiety is influenced by other factors. The results of this study can expand the application of modern communication theories, such as Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) and Social Presence Theory, by showing how smartphone-based communication patterns (chatting, social media, video calls) affect feelings of security, self-confidence, and anxiety in face-to-face social interactions.
